Waveform inversion with reflected waves: challenges and some solutions

Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is a seismic imaging technique aiming at using the full content of recorded seismic data. The method benefits from the diverse type of waves that illuminate the subsurface, in order to provide broadband quantitative models of the subsurface. After a short review of the approach, I will come back on the resolution analysis of FWI in order to discuss its limitation at depths sampled by reflections only. I will then explain how the method can be reformulated in order exploit the transmission behavior of reflection path within the so-called Reflection Waveform Inversion. The recombination with early direct and diving waves will then be discussed and illustrated on case-studies. I'll finaly show our last developments on this method, for being more robust and more computationally efficient.
