Prof. Katsu Goda (Bristol University, Faculty of Engineering) spends his third term of his Humboldt Scholarship since June 8, 2015 at GPI. He will stay until September 2015. A main research topic is the tsunami  damage and loss after earthquakes focussing on the wealth of data from the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Katsu visited Nepal shortly after the May 25, 2015 M7.8 earthquake in Nepal and studies the ground motion features as observed in the damage pattern. He also co-supervises two MSc theses dealing with ground motion correlation in and around Istanbul and the Kanto region in Japan.

  • Probabilistic seismic hazard and risk analysis

  • Strong ground motion prediction

  • Performance-based earthquake engineering (including nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures)

  • Lifecycle cost analysis of a building (including the effects of decision maker’s risk attitudes)

  • Effectiveness of seismic risk mitigation techniques (tuned mass dampers and seismic isolation)

  • Seismic loss estimation of spatially distributed structures

  • Seismic risk management and decision-making (including earthquake insurance portfolio management)
