Abstract

The past 15-20 years has taken full-waveform inversion (FWI) from a promising approach in academia to invert velocity models into a flourishing technology that is routinely used on large field data sets globally. However, the implementation of FWI on land data is well-known to be more complicated, despite substantial advancements in acquiring dense, wide-azimuth, and low-frequency data. This talk summarizes the main challenges that need to be handled when applying FWI on large scale land datasets, such as a dedicated data pre-conditioning and the characterization of the near surface. Further, we will discuss the importance to move from acoustic FWI towards FWI and the related challenges. All of the topics will be highlighted through the use of field data examples.
