Abstract
Classical seismic inversion approaches like first arrival travel-time tomography or surface wave dispersion analysis are limited in their resolution by the first Fresnel zone. By incorporating the full information content of the recorded seismic wavefield, the Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) method is able to resolve sub-wavelength structures with high fidelity. Since 2014, the working groups Applied Geophysics and Seismology at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel apply the FWI to seismic data with different degrees of complexity for archaeological prospection, engineering geophysics and most recently the imaging of features on the crustal scale. In this talk, I will present FWI field data applications from the near surface to crustal scale in Northern Germany and the Eifel region, relying on active seismic source as well as ambient noise data.
