Joachim Ritter hat an der Universität Karlsruhe (TH) Geophysik studiert (1985-1991) und dort an der Fakultät für Physik promoviert (1996). Von 1991 bis 1997 war er wissenschaftlicher Angestellter (seismische Tomographie in Ostafrika und seismische Streuung im Zentralmassiv) sowie Geschäftsführer von zwei Sonderforschungsbereichen (SFB 108 und SFB 461). 1993 und 1994 führte er Forschungsaufenthalten am USGS in Menlo Park (Ca.) durch, um eine Tomographiestudie über dem Medicine Lake Vulkan zu erstellen. Von 1997 bis 2001 war Joachim Ritter an der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen als Projektleiter für das seismologische Experiment des Eifel-Plume Projekts und habilitierte sich dort 2002 an der Fakultät für Physik. Seit 2002 ist er wieder an der Universität Karlsruhe (ab 2009 KIT), wo er 2017 zum apl. Professor ernannt wurde.

Forschung

Joachim Ritter beschäftigt sich mit experimenteller Seismologie und wendet diese auf verschiedene Bereiche an:

  • Breitband-Seismologie: Receiver-Funktionen zur Bestimmung von strukturellen Schichtgrenzen im tiefen Erdinneren sowie Scherwellen-Doppelbrechung zur Analyse von Anisotropie, um Hinweise auf Deformationsprozesse im Erdmantel zu erhalten
  • Seismische Tomographie: Abbildung des Erdinneren, um geodynamische Prozesse sichtbar zu machen
  • (Mikro-) Seismizität: Analyse von (schwachen) Erdbeben, um tektonische Bruchzonen abzubilden und menschlich induzierte Seismizität zu erforschen

  • Seismisches Hintergrundrauschen: Bestimmung von Variationen des natürlichen und menschlich verursachten Bodenrauschens, seismische Interferometrie

  • Analyse technischer Signale: z.B. Analyse der Emissionen von Windenergieanlagen, Tunnelbohrmaschinen, Explosionen, etc.

  • Untersuchungsgebiete: Eifel(vulkanismus), Süddeutschland, ostafrikanischer Graben, Lithosphäre in Skandinavien, Erdbebengefahren in Rumänien
