Joachim Ritter studied Geophysics at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) (1985-1991) and received his doctorate there at the Faculty of Physics (1996). From 1991 to 1997 he was a research associate (seismic tomography in East Africa and seismic scattering in the Massif Central) and managing director of two collaborative research centers (SFB 108 and SFB 461). In 1993 and 1994 he conducted research at the USGS in Menlo Park (Ca.) for a tomography study over the Medicine Lake volcano. From 1997 to 2001 Joachim Ritter was at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen as project leader for the seismological experiment of the Eifel-Plume project and habilitated there in 2002 at the Faculty of Physics. Since 2002 he has been back at the University of Karlsruhe (from 2009 KIT), where he was appointed apl. professor in 2017.

Research

Joachim Ritter is doing research in experimental seismology and applies it to different areas: 

  • Broadband seismology: receiver functions to determine structural discontinuities in the deep Earth's interior and shear-wave splitting to determine seismic anisotropy as method to reveal deforamtional processes in the Earth's mantle
  • Seimic tomography: imaging of the Earth's interior to visualize geodynamic processes

  • (Micro) Seismicity: analysis of even very weak earthquakes to image tectonic fault planes and to explore induced seimicity

  • Seismic background noise: determination of the variation of seismic noise due to natural and artificial sources, seimic interferometry

  • Analysis of technical signals: emissions of wind turbines, tunnel boring machines, explosions

  • Study regions: Eifel (magmatism), South Germany (tectonics), East African Rift, lithosphere and astenosphere below Fennoscandia, earthquake hazard in Romania
